Anxiety

Acupuncture is very calming for anxiety sufferers, immediately in the treatment room patients can feel a sense of calmness come over them and after just a few treatments a reduction in anxiety symptoms can be felt.

Acupuncture is also very safe and it is a good option for those who wish to avoid going on medications. It can be used in conjunction with medications and is occasionally used for those who wish to come off their current medication.Research has proven the positive effects of acupuncture on anxiety. In one study it showed that when being exposed to chronic stress after acupuncture there was no spike in stress-associated hormones.

Treating anxiety successfully relies on getting to the root cause. Western research is now showing what Chinese Medicine has always believed; that the body and mind are connected.Chinese medicine recognizes a powerful interplay between the body and emotions; the two are, in fact, inseparable. When we become emotionally upset, our internal environment also becomes disrupted, leading to physical symptoms such as: upset stomach, insomnia, headaches and tense muscles. Likewise, when we are physically compromised, our emotions can be greatly affected. Anxiety which has for the longest time been thought of as a chemical imbalance or a nervous system disorder is often caused by hormonal, gut and nutritional imbalances and we use Chinese Herbs and Nutritional recommendations to treat these.

Depression

Acupuncture and TCM can be a very effective depression treatment. Every healthy person has experienced some form of depression in his or her life. It is a normal response to overwhelming events in our lives. When we are healthy, physically and mentally, we can usually bounce back from a depressed state within a couple of days or weeks, and continue on with our normal lives. But when feelings become persistent and occur without precipitating factors, longstanding depression becomes harder to come out of.

Many things may cause the cause the body  to become blocked or unregulated: physical trauma, emotional trauma, hereditary weakness, poor diet, and chemical, physical and emotional stresses.

By working with diet, herbal medicine, and acupuncture, to regulate the parasympathetic/sympathetic nervous system of the body we can make changes that lead to a change in our emotional state.

When treating Anxiety or Depression we often work with and recommend that you see other therapist (psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists)
